The Giant Emerald
" Here it is more than far away, it is else where..."( Jean Giono)
What strikes first when discovering the Verdon is the suprisingly emeral colored water.
Taking its source at 2500 m atitude close Allos, the Verdon snakes over a stretch of 172 Km.
Part of the river separates at one point into the river Durance.
The Gorges of Verdon forms the largest canyon in Europe.
The majestic Grand Canyon stretches 21 km between the Pont du Soleil,
striding over the Verdon by the foot of Rougon and the Bridge Galetas
which connects Aiguines with Moustiers Saint Marie
The winding river bed runs between vertical cliffs which at some places are up to 700 m
( ex : la Falaise des Baumes au Belvedere « le Pas de la Baou ).
Between the 2 rocks above the chapel shines a star suspended in a 227 meters long chain.
The star has hung over Moustiers Sainte Marie for centuries.
Moustiers, one of the bigges centers for French earthware (faience),
is visited from people around the world.
